Swimming Down the Road 7-27-23

It was raining pretty hard this morning but was supposed to taper off by this afternoon, so in the hopes of staying somewhat dry, I started late this morning on a 34-mile ride from Long Lake, NY to a motel in between Inlet, NY and Old Forge, NY on the Fulton Chain of Lakes, still in the heart of the Adirondacks. Unfortunately, contrary to the weather reports, it continued to rain throughout the day, and despite my rain gear, things got pretty wet.

In spite of the weather, seeing this sign let me know I am actually making progress on my path toward the Great Lakes.

It’s been a while since I’ve written about typos on signs (see 7/7), but I couldn’t help but notice this one. It was a pleasure to be able to focus on something other than the rain.

I stopped in at a bike shop in Inlet late this afternoon where I bought another flashing rechargeable rear taillight. I hadn’t realized the charge on these only lasts five or six hours. The one I bought is supposed to last eight hours, so now I can keep two of these fully charged. My back tire pressure had fallen to 40 lbs. psi, which is potentially a concern. I will need to keep an eye on this.

The photo below shows what most of the day looked like. This is beautiful country–though in the midst of a rainstorm it takes a little more imagination to see it at its best.

This afternoon, in the rain, I passed a guy on a bike headed the opposite direction. He shouted out something about coming from the State of Washington, and I told him I had started in Bar Harbor, Maine. If I heard him right, I think he then said that Bar Harbor is where he’s headed. It’s nice to know I’ve got some company in this crazy adventure.

Joe- you might want to invest in a bicycle tire pump, and flat repair kit if you do not already
have these items. Best wishes. Scott and Stephanie Mitchell.
hey Joe! Stephanie here! I’ve been keeping up with your adventure thru Scott. he said that your wife came out at a MOST perspicacious time!! W O W !!! What a blessing that was, ‘eh? If you’d had to bike it, it most Certainly would have been a TOTAL bummer!! Have you hit any severe weather? Sounds like you had a pretty wet day yesterday. . . Have you thought of back up foul weathergear? Just a thought. . . Speaking of which, Scott’s idea of a pump & flat fix kit is a good 1. Also, he is a veritable WEALTH of knowledge about the out-of- doors, bike adventures, camping and the like. How did you like Lake George? I had some of the BEST times of my life there!! I hope you enjoyed!! looks like I’m out of space!! Anon! Stephanie

Ooof, 40psi in the rear tire. In the rain! WOW. That’s a ton of work. Which means you are in beast mode, Joe! Anyone who can do that…. hats off to you! And isn’t that something about rain gear? The marketing language around it is so glorious and convincing… but your experience mirrors my own: you’re gonna get wet regardless. I bet that hot shower in the hotel was epic! Keep going! We’re all loving your blog.
