The lake, that is. I rode 42 miles today, from Pulaski, NY to Fair Haven, NY, which sits on Little Sodus Bay on the south shore of Lake Ontario. My first glimpse of the lake waters was where the lake meets the Salmon River, which I crossed about three miles into my ride:

I am staying at the Pleasant Beach Hotel, which is 111 years old and has a restaurant with outdoor seating overlooking Little Sodus Bay. I was able to sit and look out over the bay as the sun was setting. Here was the view before sunset.

And here was the view as the sun was sinking below the horizon.

About halfway through the day’s ride, I saw some picnic tables outside the Municipal Center in Volney, NY and parked there to eat some lunch. When I went inside to use the bathroom, I realized I was actually in a courthouse. From the outside, the building looks like a large shed or barn, but it actually houses courtrooms for a Court of Justice where four judges sit. I later learned that New York has 13,000 such courts, which are empowered to handle civil and criminal misdemeanor cases involving matters such as traffic tickets, drug peddling, and the unauthorized possession of firearms. Incidentally, there is a large sign in the men’s room there warning users NOT to flush coffee grounds down the toilet, so please don’t do that if you ever stop in for a visit.

I think this was the first hotel room I’ve ever had with an antique rocking chair in it. I love it! A desk would have been nice too, but I’m not complaining.

Tomorrow’s ride will take me further west along the southern shore of the lake. More about that later.
